Full grid set for Historic Touring Car Challenge
Full grid set for Historic Touring Car Challenge & Tony Dron Trophy at Donington Historic Festival. The Donington Historic Festival (4-6 May) is approaching fast and our Historic Touring Car Challenge grid will be one of the stand-out races of this 3-day event. The HTCC taking in the Tony Dron Trophy and supported by JD Classics, will kick-start the 2018 season’s Touring Car race calendar with an impressive full grid at Donington in less than a weeks time. The popularity of this grid is booming with more and more competitors re-living the cars of their youth.
Last year’s race was won by the JD Classics-entered Bastos Rover-Vitesse piloted by Chris Ward and touring car legend Steve Soper. This capable duo romped away from their pole sitting start and a superb battle played out behind them as David Tomlin pushed his Ford Escort RS1800 to the absolute limit to beat Germany’s Dominik Roschmann in his canary yellow BMW 3.0 CSL for the remaining two podium places. This year, the Rover is back to defend its race winning honours. But so is David Tomlin with his rapid Ford Escort RS1800. We also welcome back Belgian driver Eric Mestdagh and his wonderful BMW 3.5 litre CSL. Eric drove like a demon in the Algarve in October to be first across past the flag after 2-hours beating the Ward-Soper duo in the process. Amongst the new and returning faces joining this grid are Fred Wakeman and Patrick Blakeney-Edwards in a newly-acquired Rover SD1, John Danby enters a Toyota Corolla and we welcome Mads Gjordrum from Norway driving a BMW 635i CSi – one of four lining up on the grid; the other three all being from BMW specialists Geoff Steel Racing stable and including their newly rebuilt original team car. Mark Wright/Dave Coyne and Ian & Max Goff are both taking advantage of the new rule to allow Sierra RS500s to enter the Invitation Class. All cars need to have had their engine capacities checked and certified in order to quality for podium and class awards and we are delighted to announce that almost 80% of the grid are complying with this new regulation. Those cars that have not yet been certified will be running in the Invitation Class – making up just a small proportion of the grid. Thank you to everyone who has made the effort to conform – it is very much appreciated by everyone on the grid. In the Tony Dron Trophy the battle of the Capris will return at Donington with no less than six of the Ford marque lining up, joined by just one Rover SD1 in the hands of Adam Brindle in the mix. Amongst the grid we are also looking forward to seeing the Alan Mann Racing-entered Ford Fiesta with Mark Roberts at the wheel and renowned Touring Car preparer Ken Clarke, who brings two Triumph Dolomites to the grid – sharing with son Tim. The Historic Touring Car Challenge is a one-hour race starting at 12.10 pm Saturday 5th May. We look forward to seeing you at Donington.
