Wyatt Wins the GT Cup Championship in Sensational Style
The Milton Keynes racer Jeff Wyatt, has won the 2013 GT Cup Championship in dramatic fashion.
Entering the final two races of the 19 race national series some 59 points behind season long Championship leader Alex Martin in his Ferrari 458, Jeff and his Geoff Steel Racing BMW M3, was the only other driver to have a mathematical chance of overhauling the points tally in this 4 class multi-marque national championship. To do so, Jeff needed a class win in both races, or claim a couple of class pole positions ( which attract an additional bonus point ) and settle for two 2nd places. The target was to earn 60 points which ever way he could to win the Championship by 1 solitary point, and this, against the odds, is what he did. Jeff’s task was made possible by the decision of Martin not to compete at the event and therefore throwing any chance of winning any more points, thinking his points haul was already enough to secure the coveted overall trophy, and instead race at a long standing GT race commitment at the Italian Monza track with his Ferrari. A decision he is surely now regretting.
“wow that was pressure and I have to admit a bit of a surprise following a few seasons of not much racing. We set the car up for this event using all our experience to give me a tool with a chance of winning. The time of running a cautious points earning approach was now over, we had to win. Setting pole position for the first race, only my 3rd of the season, by 3 tenths was the key, that bonus point gave me the luxury of “only” needing a win and a second place finish in the two races to take the big silverware. I won the first race by 4 seconds from the very racy Porsche GT3 of McEwen. Meaning a 2nd place would do the trick in race two. To win this Championship from a field of stunning GT cars piloted by some of the country s top driving talent, is a big thrill indeed” comments Jeff.
Jeff is now planning a step up in category for 2014 to either the British GT Championship or the International GT arena. As ever this depends upon sponsorship, so a winter of working to secure new sponsorship looks to be ahead.
